ABSTRACT

This study highlights the major challenges faced by hotel interns in their career development and the human resource management of hotels in the current macroeconomic environment, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper developed a conceptual model for organizational identification, turnover intention, and perceived alternative job opportunities in the context of hotel internships. A total of 350 samples were collected from hotel internships in Macau. The presented results indicate that organizational identification has a significant negative impact on turnover intention. In addition, alternative job opportunities do not moderate the relationship between organizational identification and turnover intention. The results also showed that females had a higher level of evaluative identification for hotel internships compared to males. In addition, interns from high-income families had a higher level of evaluative identification compared to those from low- and middle-income families. The theoretical contribution extends the concept of organizational socialization to include internship stages in the field of hospitality management. Finally, this paper proposes measures for managing hotel internships during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic situation affected population health and lifestyle not only for a short period but also long period. Long COVID symptoms is a long-term illness after COVID condition. Long COVID symptoms greatly affected to quality of life of patients. Massage is a unique treatment form of alternative medicine that can promote health in various dimensions. From the previous studies, massage has affected to Long COVID mechanism via anti-inflammatory process, immune system enhancing process, and hormone level balancing that related to Long COVID symptoms as well as being able to reduce the symptoms of the long COVID symptoms. The study about the efficacy and safety of massage against Long COVID symptoms is the essential approach to increase the value of massage and develop health services in the future.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This scoping review aimed to determine whether the COVID-19 pandemic influenced any modifications to patient selection methods or prioritisation and services provided by proton therapy centres. Method(s): This review was conducted based on the PRISMA methodology and Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review guidelines.1,2 A literature search was performed in Medline, Embase, Web Of Science and Scopus as well as grey literature. Keywords including "COVID-19" and "Proton Therapy" were used. Articles published from 1 January 2020 in English were included. In total, 138 studies were identified of which 14 articles met the inclusion criteria. A scoping review design was chosen to capture the full extent of information published relating to the aim. Result(s): Six of 14 articles included statements regarding treatment of COVID-19 patients. Three publications recommended deferred or alternative treatment, two indicated to treat urgent/emergency patients and one reported continuous treatment for infectious patients. Recurring impacts on PT provision included more frequent use of alternative therapies, reduced referrals, delayed treatment starts and CT simulation, change in treatment volume and staffing limitations due to pandemic restrictions. Consequently, telehealth consults, remote work, reduction in patient visitors, screening procedures and rigorous cleaning protocols were recommended. Discussion/Conclusion: Few publications detailed patient selection or workflow methods used during the pandemic. Further research is needed to obtain more detailed information regarding current global patient selection methods in proton therapy, collecting this data could aid in future planning for proton therapy in Australia.

ABSTRACT

This article centres on a qualitative interview extract, the ‘Story of the Pebble', in which a West African Hospital Social Worker Ado, working in a UK context, and identifying as a Shaman, describes successfully trusting his instincts to create a symbol for a dying patient. Despite criticisms from colleagues, Ado's capacity to understand his patients needs are justified both before and after her death.The article discusses significant themes from the interview extract, including the meaning of professionalism, practice wisdom and cultural influences in a UK social work context, as well as through Ado's heritage and identification as a Shaman. The article considers holistic patient care in a medical context and suggests this has some useful lessons for social workers, particularly those involved with dying people. Although the extract, and wider research study from which it is drawn, pre-date the Covid 19 pandemic, this is referenced throughout, linking the interview extract to ways of helping practitioners and educators to consider people holistically at end of life. The Italian system of the enforcement of the sentences has been shaped, since the enter into force of the Italian Constitution in 1948, on the rehabilitation principle but the path towards a real implementation of this pivotal goal is still ongoing. Moreover, conditions like the ones strictly linked to permanent prison overcrowding and reduced economical resources for the implementation of prison and probation staff stand as elements that slow down the achievement of the expected outcomes. In this complicated framework, people that committed a crime can count on a well structured system of alternative measures that have been improved and reinforced during the last twenty years. Despite the ongoing efforts for a better application of such measures, there are still specific issues linked, above all, to the most vulnerable people (foreigners and persons at the margins of the society) that are in the position to experiment substantial discrimination in regard to their lack of the fundamental elements asked by the law for the application of an alternative sanctions. To overcome the many problems still unresolved, the Italian prison and probation system is attaching great importance to the role of restorative justice, as a useful tool for achieving constitutional objectives. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022. ABSTRACT

In medical colleges, cadaveric dissection is an effective anatomy teaching method. Cadaveric dissections put students at the center of learning and show structures in their natural environment. However, most students dislike autopsy dissection since it's tedious and time-consuming. Thus, our study examined first-year medical students' attitudes toward dissection to learn anatomy. After the semester, students received a 3-domain questionnaire on preparedness, attitude, and restrictions. All information was gathered and recorded anonymously using Google forms. Each domain has many questions that add up to a score that shows how well they are prepared and how far online learning can go. One hundred MBBS first-year students participated in online anatomy lessons. After online courses, consenting students completed Google feedback forms regarding their experiences, which were examined and quantified. One hundred students completed the questionnaire and provided comments. Online courses were the most fantastic method to study human anatomy in medical school, according to 97.2%. Only 32.8% of students were uneasy, utilizing visuals to illustrate the softer aspects. Students' emotions and attitudes during corpse dissection varied by gender. Online was more appealing to males than women. Students prefer online courses over image-based ones because of the flexibility of time management and seating configuration. The statistical analysis revealed significant gender-related inequalities in student opinions. Other medical students showed similar variances at various phases of the research. The online anatomy classes for AVMC&H medical students were easy and enjoyable and utilized the "steeplechase" method. Our study shows the pros and cons of online education. Trainers/instructors should examine using online live forms as an instructional tool in anatomy training and generate new anatomy-related films for formal live teaching in the medical curriculum to accomplish this goal. However, additional study is needed to determine how much online education affects student learning and training.

ABSTRACT

The article describes the world's experience in developing the solar industry. It discusses the mechanisms of state support for developing renewable energy sources in the cases of five countries that are the most successful in this area—China, the United States, Japan, India, and Germany. Furthermore, it contains a brief review of state policy in producing electricity by renewable energy facilities in Kazakhstan. This paper uses statistical information from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the International Energy Agency (IEA), British Petroleum (BP), and the Renewable Energy Network (REN21), and peer-reviewed sources. The research methodology includes analytical research and evaluation methods to examine the current state of solar energy policy, its motivators and incentives, as well as the prospects for its development in Kazakhstan and in the world. Research shows that solar energy has a huge development potential worldwide and is sure to take its place in gross electricity production. This paper focuses on the selected economic policies of the top five countries and Kazakhstan, in what may be considered a specific research limitation. Future research suggestions for the expansion of Renewable Energy (RE) in Kazakhstan could include analysing the impact of introducing dedicated policies and incentives for solar systems and exploring the benefits and challenges of implementing large RE zones with government–business collaboration.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted many business activities to non-face-to-face activities, and videoconferencing has become a new paradigm. However, conference spaces isolated from surrounding interferences are not always readily available. People frequently participate in public places with unexpected crowds or acquaintances, such as cafés, living rooms, and shared offices. These environments have surrounding limitations that potentially cause challenges in speaking up during videoconferencing. To alleviate these issues and support the users in speaking-restrained spatial contexts, we propose a text-to-speech (TTS) speaking tool as a new speaking method to support active videoconferencing participation. We derived the possibility of a TTS speaking tool and investigated the empirical challenges and user expectations of a TTS speaking tool using a technology probe and participatory design methodology. Based on our findings, we discuss the need for a TTS speaking tool and suggest design considerations for its application in videoconferencing. © 2023 ACM.

ABSTRACT

Concerns about the global environmental situation are leading to a search for new climate solutions, one of which is to stimulate an energy transition at the global level by expanding the use of alternative energy sources and introducing smart energy-saving technologies. Significant financial resources are needed for this purpose. Therefore, it is vital to assess the prospects for alternative energy in the post-COVID economy by analyzing the current state of this segment of the global energy market and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on it. The research uses statistical data from the World Bank, the International Energy Agency, and Bloomberg Information and Analysis Agency. The authors apply the methods of retrospective and comparative analysis and the least squares method. The analysis showed the growing importance of alternative energy, especially in developed countries, the serious impact of global energy inflation, and the favorable prospects for renewable energy sources in general. ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to identify the impact of renewable energy on Saudi economy during 2000-2021. Analytical techniques were used to conduct this study. An analysis of the study used a set of variables, in which Renewable energy perceives as independent variable and the dependent variables are GDP per capita, net foreign direct investment, unemployment, fixed capital formation, and net foreign trade. The data of the study were analyzed using the E-views program. According to the study, renewable energy has an impact on certain economic variables and does not have an impact on others. A partial validity is found for the study's central hypothesis. According to our findings, renewable energy contributes significantly to net foreign direct investment, unemployment, and fixed capital formation, but not to GDP per capita, net foreign trade, or fixed capital formation.

ABSTRACT

Energy poverty is a multifaceted phenomenon that affects many Europeans. Alleviating energy poverty is high in the EU, national, and local policy agendas. Despite the attention the phenomenon has been gaining from a policy perspective, especially after the current energy crisis, there are still some gaps due to the complexity of the issue and its vastly different manifestations across Europe. This manuscript presents the policy implications stemming from the implementation of the POWEPROOR approach in alleviating energy poverty in eight European countries, as co-created with relevant stakeholders in each country. The knowledge gained from empowering energy-poor citizens by promoting behavioural changes and small-scale energy efficiency interventions, as well as by encouraging the uptake of renewable energy sources in the form of collective energy initiatives while leveraging innovative financing schemes, resulted in policy recommendations for national and sub-national governments and lessons for civil society and the private sector.

ABSTRACT

The additional impact of emission-reduction measures in North China (NC) during autumn and winter on the air quality of downwind regions is an interesting but less addressed topic. The mass concentrations of routine air pollutants, the chemical compositions, and sources of fine particles (PM2.5) for January 2018, 2019, and 2020 at a megacity of Central China were identified, and meteorology-isolated by a machine-learning technique. Their variations were classified according to air mass direction. An unexpectedly sharp increase in emission-related PM2.5 by 22.7% (18.0 mug m-3) and 25.7% (19.4 mug m-3) for air masses from local and NC in 2019 was observed compared to those of 2018. Organic materials exhibited the highest increase in PM2.5 compositions by 6.90 mug m-3 and 6.23 mug m-3 for the air masses from local and NC. PM2.5 source contributions related to emission showed an upsurge from 1.39 mug m-3 (biomass burning) to 24.9 mug m-3 (secondary inorganic aerosol) in 2019 except for industrial processes, while all reduced in 2020. From 2018 to 2020, the emission-related contribution of coal combustion to PM2.5 increased from 10.0% to 19.0% for air masses from the local area. To support the priority natural gas quotas in northern China, additional coal in cities of southern China was consumed, raising related emissions from transportation activities and road dust in urban regions, as well as additional biofuel consumption in suburban or rural regions. All these activities could explain the increased primary PM2.5 and related precursor NO2. This study gave substantial evidence of air pollution control measures impacting the downwind regions and promote the necessity of air pollution joint control across the administration.Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

ABSTRACT

The collection and distribution network of ports is the main cause of carbon emissions. The carbon peak is a basic policy in China, and the subsidy policy is one of the common measures used by the government to incentivize carbon reduction. We analyzed the transportation methods and the flow direction of a port and proposed a carbon emission calculation method based on emission factors. Based on the transportation time and the cost, a generalized transportation utility function was constructed, and the logit model was used to analyze the impacts of subsidy policies on transportation, thus calculating the effects of the subsidies on carbon reduction. We used Guangzhou Port as a case study, and calculated the carbon reduction effects in six different subsidy policy scenarios and concluded that the absolute carbon reduction value was proportional to the subsidy intensity. In addition, we constructed a subsidy carbon reduction efficiency index and found that the Guangzhou Port collection and distribution network had higher subsidy carbon reduction efficiency in low-subsidy scenarios. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was conducted on the subsidy parameters, and scenario 8 was found to have the highest subsidy carbon reduction efficiency. This achievement can provide decision support for the carbon emission strategy of the port collection and distribution network.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the need for greater participation of urban informal settlement dwellers in urban development. How this participation is envisioned, however, is influenced by how policy paradigms view such populations in relation to knowledge. How valuable is what they know? How relevant is their perspective to shaping policies? To explore these questions, this chapter analyses the limitations of the ways in which smart urbanism views the knowledge of the masses, using historical institutionalism as a perspective to trace the evolution of urban policy and its assumptions about knowledge in the context of Indore. It draws on a study undertaken by the Bahá'í Chair for Studies in Development to make visible how people resolve development issues through applying their own spiritual convictions and conceptions of wellbeing. ABSTRACT

Research suggests that organizational support for alternative work arrangements (AWAs) is essential for the effective implementation of AWAs in public accounting, yet studies consistently suggest that such organizational support is lacking. Despite mass adoption of telecommuting (one type of AWA) during the COVID-19 pandemic, recent evidence suggests that firms vary greatly in the extent to which they plan to support telecommuting in the post-pandemic environment. Using a sample of 133 public accounting professionals, we explore whether several factors under the organization's control influence perceived organizational support for telecommuting, and whether such support is linked with perceived career penalties from telecommuting usage and turnover intentions. We find that supervisor support for personal/family needs and procedural justice regarding telecommuting requirements are positively associated with perceptions of organizational support for telecommuting. Further, greater perceived organizational support for telecommuting is associated with both lower perceived career penalties from telecommuting usage and lower turnover intentions.

ABSTRACT

Background/Objectives: Emerging evidence suggests that complement system infection-dependent hyperactivation may worsen COVID-19 outcome. We investigated the role of predicted high impact variants -referred as Qualifying Variants (QVs) -of complement system genes in predisposing asymptomatic COVID-19 in elderly individuals, known to be more susceptible to severe disease. Method(s): Exploiting Whole-Exome Sequencing (WES) data and 56 complement system genes, we performed a gene-based collapsing test between 164 asymptomatic subjects (age >= 60 y.o.) and 56,885 European individuals from the gnomAD database. We replicated this test comparing the same asymptomatic individuals with 147 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Result(s): We found an enrichment of QVs in three genes (MASP1, COLEC10 and COLEC11), which belong to the lectin pathway, in the asymptomatic cohort. Moreover, individuals with QVs showed lower serum levels of Masp1 and of prothrombin activity compared to controls while no differences were observed for CH50 and AH50 levels that measure the activity of classical and alternative complement pathways, respectively. Finally, integrative analyses of genome-wide association study and expression quantitative loci traits data showed a correlation between polymorphisms associated with asymptomatic COVID-19 and decreased expression of MASP1, COLEC11 and COLEC10 genes in lung tissue. Conclusion(s): This study suggests that rare genetic variants can protect from severe COVID-19 by mitigating the activation of lectin pathway and prothrombin activity.

ABSTRACT

This article uses data from several publicly available databases to show that the distribution of intellectual property for frontier technologies, including those useful for sustainable development, is very highly skewed in favor of a handful of developed countries. The intellectual property rights (IPR) regime as it exists does not optimize the global flow of technology and know-how for the attainment of the sustainable development goals and is in need of updating. Some features of the Fourth Industrial Revolution imply that the current system of patents is even more in need of reform than before. COVID-19 vaccines and therapies and the vast inequality in access to these has highlighted the costs of inaction. We recommend several policy changes for the international IPR regime. Broadly, these fall into three categories: allowing greater flexibility for developing countries, reassessing the appropriateness of patents for technologies that may be considered public goods, and closing loopholes that allow for unreasonable intellectual property protections.

ABSTRACT

Developing a sustainable and reliable photovoltaic (PV) energy system requires a comprehensive analysis of solar profiles and an accurate prediction of solar energy performance at the study site. Installing the PV modules with optimal tilt and azimuth angles has a significant impact on the total irradiance delivered to the PV modules. This paper proposes a comprehensive optimization model to integrate total irradiance models with the PV temperature model to find the optimal year-round installation parameters of PV modules. A novel integration between installation parameters and the annual average solar energy is presented, to produce the maximum energy output. The results suggest an increase in energy yields of 4% compared to the conventional scheme, where tilt angle is equal to the latitude and the PV modules are facing south. This paper uses a real-time dataset for the NEOM region in Saudi Arabia to validate the superiority of the proposed model compared to the conventional scheme, but it can be implemented as a scheme wherever real-time data are available.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Patients with gynecological cancer commonly use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) methods to cope with the disease. However, despite the existence of treatment strategies, the effect of fear and anxiety caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on attitudes about CAM use is unclear. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of fear and anxiety experienced by patients with gynecological cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic on their attitudes towards the use of CAM. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study that included 177 women with gynecological cancer; participants were recruited from a social networking site for cancer patients in Turkey between June and December 2021. Data were collected using an online survey that included the Personal Information Form, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale, and the Attitude Towards Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Scale. Descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson's correlation test, and simple linear and multiple regression analyses were performed to analyze the data. RESULTS: During the pandemic, 55.4% of the participants reported using CAM methods, but only 22.6% were using CAM before the pandemic. The participants who used CAM during the pandemic also scored higher on the fear of COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety scales (20.69 ± 5.37 and 13.09 ± 6.29, respectively) compared to the participants who did not use CAM (9.29 ± 2.72 and 6.35 ± 2.06, respectively). Fear of COVID-19 accounted for 52% of the CAM attitude score, while coronavirus anxiety accounted for 15% of the CAM attitude score. Fear of COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety together accounted for 53% of CAM attitude. CONCLUSION: Gynecological cancer patients with high levels of COVID-19-related anxiety and fear during the pandemic used CAM more. Given that the psychological effects of the pandemic will continue in the coming years, CAM use should be evaluated as a coping strategy, especially due to the COVID-19-related anxiety and fear experienced by patients with gynecological cancer. While the rational and effective CAM methods should be supported, strategies should be developed to prevent misuse of CAM and its interference in prescribed medical treatments.
